Ms. Marvel news, rumours, casting and release date

Ms. Marvel has been in the Marvel universe for some time now, and recently catapulted into the spotlight following the release of the game Marvel’s Avengers. Soon, the world will know even more about this teenaged superhero, as she’ll be getting her own series on Disney Plus.

The show will join the likes of The Falcon and the Winter Soldier and WandaVision, contributing significantly to the overall narrative of phase 4 of the MCU. If you’d like to know more about Ms. Marvel – including the plot, casting and release date – then keep on reading.

When does Ms. Marvel start?

Whilst Disney hasn’t confirmed an exact date for the release of Ms. Marvel, its due to follow Hawkeye in the Disney Plus line-up as things stand. That pips it somewhere between late 2021, and early 2022.

The latter is probably more likely, as Disney Plus France listed the show as having a 2022 release date, alongside Moon Knight and She-Hulk (via MCU Cosmic).

Who are the cast and crew of Ms. Marvel?

The person playing the starring role is Iman Vellani, a Canadian actress who will be making her onscreen debut as Ms. Marvel.

Vellani is so far the only talent to have been cast – but we do know that Disney is currently looking for actors to play various other roles. These include Kamala Khan’s family, some friends and possible love interests. These rumours come via Discussing Film, Illuminerdi, Murphy’s Multiverse and The Direct.

Here’s the full list of characters that have been rumoured to be casting for Ms. Marvel:

  • Amir Khan
  • Muneeba Khan
  • Yusuf Khan
  • Kareem/Red Dagger
  • Kamran
  • Zoe Zimmer
  • Tyesha Hillman
  • Sheikh
  • Fariha
  • Aadam
  • Auntie Ruby

Behind the camera, Bisha K. Ali will act as head writer. The Hollywood Reporter has also pipped Adil El Arbi, Bilall Fallah, Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and Meera Meno to act as directors on specific episodes in season 1.

What is the plot of Ms. Marvel?

Like we expect Moon Knight and She-Hulk to do, we assume that Ms. Marvel will be an origin story. Kamala Khan is a nerdy Pakistani-American teenager, and the first Muslim superhero in the Marvel universe. Based in Jersey City, she gains her powers as a polymorph by coming into contact with Terrigen Mist.

Kamala can change her appearance to whatever she wills but needs time to recharge after using her powers. Her enemies vary from massive big bads to more street-level crime, but we suspect that the series may lead towards the former.

The reason we believe this is Kamala’s ties to Carol Danvers in the Marvel Comics – AKA Captain Marvel. The sequel to Captain Marvel is scheduled to come out around the same time as Ms. Marvel, so we wouldn’t be surprised if the two shared some scenes, and ultimately tied their plots together.

This isn’t the only Disney+ series to plant the seeds to direct tie-ins with movies – we expect WandaVision to do exactly the same with the sequel to Doctor Strange.

How can I watch Ms. Marvel?

Like other shows in the MCU, Ms. Marvel will be a Disney Plus exclusive. If you haven’t yet got an account on Disney+, it costs £5.99/$6.99 per month for a rolling subscription, and £59.99/$69.99 for an annual pass. You can sign up for Disney Plus here.
