How to watch His Dark Materials
UK viewers will be able to watch His Dark Materials on BBC One, or on BBC iPlayer. If you’re in the US, you’ll need a HBO, HBO Now or HBO Max subscription to watch His Dark Materials.
If you’re not based in the UK or the US – or are out of your respective country when the show airs – then never fear. You’ll still be able to tune in with the help of one of our suggested VPNs for streaming. VPNs basically block your IP address, so you can appear as if you’re browsing from another country and therefore unlock international sites. For the best price and performance, we recommend NordVPN.
If you’d like further details on how to use a VPN, then take a look at our guides for streaming content on BBC iPlayer abroad, and for watching HBO outside of the US.
What do we know about the plot of season 2?
Spoilers for season 1 of His Dark Materials
The debut season of His Dark Materials covered the plot of the first book in the trilogy – Northern Lights (The Golden Compass in the US) – whilst also including elements of future books. Producer Jane Tranter confirmed in an interview with The Express that season 2 will retell the story of book two, The Subtle Knife.
Season 1 left off with Lyra and Will entering the window between dimensions. Lyra had just witnessed the betrayal of her father Lord Asriel sacrificing her friend Roger to open the bridge to the multiverse, after being on the run from her mother, Mrs Coulter.
In season 2, Lyra and Will’s worlds will collide, and we’ll discover more about how Lord Boreal plays an integral role in this story. The book also includes snippets of Lord Asriel’s journey, so we’re likely to see this dotted throughout episodes.
Ruth Wilson also discussed how season 2 will delve more into the complicated mind of Mrs Coulter during the Comic Con panel: “What was really joyful this season to play with, was to get into her circumstances more… What she’s had to deal with as a woman in a very male world, and the sacrifices she’s had to make and at what cost.”
The trailer also shows a mysterious entity haunting the streets of Cittàgazze – what its purpose could be remains to be seen.
Who will star in His Dark Materials?
As far as we’re aware, the major players in season 1 will be making a comeback. We’ll be seeing Dafne Keen as Lyra Belacqua, Ruth Wilson as Mrs Coulter, James McAvoy as Lord Asriel, Will Parry as Amir Wilson and Lin-Manuel Miranda as Lee Scoresby.
One character making a much bigger appearance in season 2 will be Will Parry’s father – John Parry – played by Andrew Scott, who is known primarily for his role on Fleabag.
